Genesis 2:7 – Only humanity is said to personally get breath in the nose from Yahweh; nose to nose I propose. Just as man and woman gently breath nose to nose when the celebrant announces, “You may now kiss the bride”. They don’t speak to each other. They just say, “I do” in agreement with the one speaking forth the ‘unconditional except for death’ marriage covenant.

Genesis 2:7 CLV ⁷ And forming is Yahweh Elohim the human of soil from the ground, and He is blowing into his nostrils the breath of the living, and becoming is the human a living soul.

Genesis 7:22 – In the flood, God killed all whose breath was in the nose (humanity) except eight humans.

Genesis 7:22 LITV ²² All died in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land.

Lamentations 4:20 – The breath of our nostrils (humanity) was taken out of God’s land by the enemy. They were no longer breathing covenant air in the land of God. They were living in His shadow rather than with His Spirit.

Lamentations 4:20 ²⁰ The breath of our nostrils—the anointed of Jehovah, Hath been captured in their pits, of whom we said: `In his shadow we do live among nations.’

Blessings like life and land come from God’s nose.

Exodus 15:8 – Parting the Red Sea was more like the breath of life to God’s people than His wrath. When God stopped breathing out of His nose to save His people, the land was flooded and the enemy drowned. I purpose that maybe θυμός in the following verse should not be translated anger.

Exodus 15:8 – God’s nose is life to His people

Exodus 15:8 KJV ⁸ And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as an heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea.

2 Samuel 22:9-18 – His noses heated up before his wrath consumed the enemy. His mouth opened to consume. Breath from His nose saved His people by giving them land to breath on.

Job 4:9 – Eliphaz was wrong to say this about Job: God was not going to destroy Job, but rather save him.

Isaiah 2:22 – God’s nose breath gave breath to His humanity as they passed through the Red Sea. The Egyptians who wanted to enslave God’s humanity drowned. Later Isaiah himself wondered why God was being so long in the nose toward His people.

Job 41:18-21 – Even the fire breathing reptile opened his mouth to consume, after his soul or nose-breath (pressure cooker) heats up.

Even a dog opens his mouth to breath hard after he is too hot for his nose to handle.

John 20:22

How do we interpret the breath of John 20? This Greek word emphusaō is used only once in the Bible. We get our English word emphasis from it. Jesus was giving His disciples a foretokening from old testament rhetoric, introducing them to the New Covenant Spirit of humanity. The more emphatic breath of humanity was to come upon them at Pentecost. His physical breath was an expression of what He would do for them after He returned to the Father.

Breath is often a picture of the Spirit, even though you can’t see either one. The Hebrew word for Spirit is also a word for breath. Jesus physically breathed on his followers to signify what He was going to do later by the Spirit. Maybe out of His nose as His Father had done when He saved them from their enemies in the past. Jesus was promising a saving breath that would reveal a spiritual land for His people. The Holy Spirit (the breath of God from heaven) brought salvation with no chance of the wrath of God. God’s old covenant wrath was spent in AD 70 after the new covenant humanity was saved by the breath of Christ. There isn’t any new covenant wrath of God. “Long in the nose” is forever now, for those in covenant with God. God was long in the nose till the end of the old covenant age. He warned His people to be out of Jerusalem when His final old covenant wrath was poured out on old covenant hold-outs.

Romans 8:9

Revelation 6:9-11

A marriage couple who are long in the nose are still kissing and making up with each other. When we talk to a lawyer our marriage may be doomed to destruction. While still nose to nose we are growing together spirit to spirit and our covenant life is still alive. You only blow in someones mouth or nose if they have stopped breathing and you want to resuscitate them. The Holy Spirit came as a mighty rushing wind and tongues of fire on Pentecost, so maybe Jesus did symbolically blow on His disciples through His mouth. Everyone under law was spiritually dead.
