The Old Covenant Watchers v. The Unaware

Jesus obviously warned His chosen Jews to be always on watch for the arrival of His Day. Romans 13 is a follow-up commentary. Romans was written decades after Mark 13 took place in Jerusalem. Romans was written after 30 years of advancing into the night watches. The Jews who were choosing to stay in the dark were still in imminent danger. They did not fear the Roman sword as the Day of the Lord approached. The night was far spent. The Day of the Lord was about to take the lawbreakers by surprise.

Their eyes would be opened by the last sign. When their typical destruction finally dawned on them, it was too late. If they didn’t have the Holy Spirit they were not His sons. Attempting to throw off the Roman sword didn’t help them at all. They were all lawbreakers in the sight of God. Whether viewed as the 70-year or the 40-year old covenant fulfillment, only 10 years was left till the Roman sword (referred to in chapter 13 of the epistle to the Romans) surrounded Jerusalem. The Roman sword came to put an end to the typical lawbreakers who were still holed up in typical Jerusalem. God’s appointed authorities didn’t bear the sword in vain, like the lawbreakers who bore God’s name.

Mark 13:33-37

LITV 33 Watch! Be wakeful, and pray. For you do not know when the time is. 34 As a man [human or covenant man] going away, leaving his house, and giving his slaves authority, and to each his work (and he commanded the doorkeeper, that he watch), 35 then you [y’all] watch, for you do not know when the lord of the house is coming, at evening, or at midnight, or at cock crowing, or early [morning]; 36 so that he may not come suddenly and find you sleeping. 37 And what I say to you, I say to all. Watch!

Old Covenant Context Question: When will the temple be destroyed, asked privately by Peter, Jacob, John and Andrew?

Answer: Jesus tells them to be awake at all times (mostly the dark times of the dawning new day) whether dusk, mid night, dawn or early morning. Humanity was fulfilled in Jesus when an old covenant Jew stood in the complete image of God. He Himself became the temple of the Holy Spirit at His first old covenant baptism. Jesus was baptized into the old covenant church before He was baptized into the new covenant church. As a completely humanized Jew, Jesus worked in the power of the Holy Spirit even in the old covenant. Jesus notably did work for His people even on their typical sabbaths. He did the work of His Father. Jesus wouldn’t rest until He enabled His brethren to join Him in His work. They Jews tasted the Holy Spirit during Jesus’ 3 1/2 year ministry to them and with them. He had another baptism to undergo. He sabbatized His people by resurrecting them into His sabbath rest. His last old covenant work week was a redemption of their (not good) creation week. The Jews were redeemed by Jesus Himself out of their worst work week ever. That work was done for His people not for Himself.

New creation days had all typically started in the dark. Jesus’ mission was to bring His people into His sabbath rest. He wouldn’t rest until His brethren could join Him. The 6th eschatological day of works was finally fulfilled by an old covenant Jew, hence the night (dusking of the 6th day) was advancing into the full light of the 7th day. The 6th day of the works under the law had been fulfilled by Jewish Jesus. Now Jesus was doing a sabbath work. He was sabbatizing His people in His sabbath rest. The Jews were free to work in the Lord of the sabbath rather than in the law of Moses. The law of Christ was: work when the Father is working.

The Holy-Spirit-enabled Jews joined Jesus in His sabbatism work, even in the old covenant. It was dawning into the never-ending 7th day in the Lord of the sabbath. The re-creation continued throughout the night of the final sabbath day. The works of the law could only be fulfilled by the Lord of the sabbath. He gave up His sabbath rest in the old covenant so His old covenant people could join Him in His very good work. Work wasn’t typically allowed to continue past the evening of the 6th day. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to the Jews so they could join Him in His good works of covenant completion. The sabbath keepers in the flesh tried to stop the work. Unfaithful Jews hypocritically demanded law keeping.

When Hebrews was written to the Hebrews, the final fall sabbatism was all that remained for the chosen people of God, but there was still work for them to do. The law endowment gift arrived on the sabbath of Pentecost. The Holy Spirit enabled the 12 tribes to prepare to enter the land legally by grace. The guarantee of the Holy Spirit endowment gave them rest as they worked toward the goal of their remaining sabbatism. Jesus went ahead of them in order to prepare their new place. He sent His Spirit to the 12 tribes to prepare them. The Holy Spirit came down from the realm of the new Jerusalem to the realm of the old Jerusalem. A real municipal transition was occurring for the true Jews; a municipal exile for the unfaithful.

AD 70 put the typical city to rest forever. Just as the 70 years of typical rest came upon the land as a half-time penalty on the law breakers in the land, so the final penalty of destruction came upon the lawbreakers in the land. Their was no prophecy to return to the land after another 70. The final 70-year fulfillment of their typical 70 year exile was in Jesus, in one of two ways: eternal life in the new Jerusalem Jesus prepared for them or in the destruction of the temple just as He promised: either permanent exile from the old house or permanent citizenship in the new. When the people of God typically re-entered the land they continued counting under old covenant law. Nobody in the land today is continuing under old covenant law. Either they are not in the old covenant land or they are lawlessly in the old covenant. Romans 13 was written as an advancement of Mark 13, after the night watches were far spent and the day was at hand. The faithful Gentiles had Joined the night watches alongside the faithful Jews, by the time Romans was written.

Romans 13:11-12

LITV 11 Also this, knowing the time, that it is now the hour for you to be aroused from sleep, for now our salvation is nearer than when we believed. 12 The night is far gone, and the day has drawn near; then let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the weapons of the light.

If Jesus was talking about a 24-hour day, then the watchful Jews would not get any sleep until AD 70 past and the Roman sword did its due diligence, unless they rotated the night watches. And why not be watchful at mid-day in this parable? Because Jesus was returning for the final sabbatism of the old covenant into the never ending new covenant day. The never ending day came out of the dark like every other Jewish day: after evening and morning, not after evening and noon. The formulaic evening and morning phrase that came before each new creation day, contains the four watches we see in Jesus’ answer: at evening, or at midnight, or at cock crowing, or early morning. Jesus was resurrected into the new creation within that same paradigm. When Mary arrived at the tomb in the early morning it was already empty. His new covenant creation day already dawned on Him. That new day would bring rest to all His chosen people in His new covenant creation. Jesus Himself already had the full light of day in His old covenant creation. He took His full light into their dark day at high noon, so they could join Him in the resurrection of their dark day. Some chose to stay asleep in the dark.

Jesus was telling the Jews to watch for the Day of the Lord and then get out of old covenant Jerusalem before it arrived. The the Lord of the house returned in AD 70. The temple was destroyed and we have been in the unending day of the new Jewish creation ever since. The unfaithful Jews were all caught asleep in their old covenant darkness. The faithful Jews kept watch and saw the signs. They were the woke Jews who lived to see their new day fully arrive. Even if the faithful Jews were martyred by their own brethren in the flesh, they were still covenantally alive when their old covenant ended. The house in reference here is without a doubt the old temple system that still had standing in Jesus day. Jesus came to rescue and telos the day of Adam and Israel into His new creation Day of completion. He removed their system of temporary animal covering, but not before re-covering His chosen people with Himself. His chosen people were no longer in the flesh and blood mode when AD 70 arrived. Rather than die in the dark, they moved into the dawning of His new day. The dark transition night was advancing. The new day was at hand.

Those who were still in the flesh and blood covenant did not inherit the kingdom. Their lights went out and stayed out. They did not advance into the full light of day. The flesh and blood covenant ended in the dark because the old covenant unbelievers loved the darkness more than the light. They weren’t watching for the Lord to return as the night of the new day advanced into the light of the new day. The new covenant is better because it never gets broken nor comes to a sleepy end in the dark. All God’s people were roused from their “sleep”. The light of the new covenant day never ends. Let it shine on you. The unfaithful old covenant Jews who loved the darkness did not stop the new covenant light from dawning on the faithful Jews. The Day of the Lord caught the unfaithful Jews unaware. By the time it dawned on them it was too late. They were stuck in old covenant Jerusalem when their prophesied destruction finally arrived. Who better to warn the Jews to beware then their own prophesied Christ from their own tribe of Judah? Jesus was a true prophet of course.

Mark 13:1-4

YLT 1 And as he is going forth out of the temple, one of his disciples saith to him, `Teacher, see! what stones! and what buildings!’ 2 and Jesus answering said to him, `Seest thou these great buildings? there may not be left a stone upon a stone, that may not be thrown down.’ 3 And as he is sitting at the mount of the Olives, over-against the temple, Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, were questioning him by himself, 4 `Tell us when these things shall be? and what is the sign when all these may be about to be fulfilled?’ [συντελεισθαι]

G4931 (G5745) συντελεισθαι – To Be Accomplished

Dodson: συντελέωI – fulfill, accomplishI bring to an end

Peter, James, John and Andrew ask for “the sign” of all these things about to be completed or fulfilled (telosed), in contrast to the unbelieving Jews who asked Jesus for a sign to prove His messiahship. Believing Jews asked Jesus to reveal the timing of His plan to destroy the second old covenant temple. The unbelievers scoffed. Jesus gives His chosen Jews many signs rather than the one sign they asked for. He gave unbelieving Jews only the one sign. That one sign would turn the unfaithful Jews into faithful Jew, if they saw it for what it was. Believers saw the 3rd day sign and the many signs that came after it. The unbelievers saw only saw the last sign of verse 26. Had the unbelievers believed the witness of the third day sign, they would have seen and believed the signs to evacuate before it was too late. Jerusalem today is not old covenant Jerusalem. There is no such thing as old covenant Jerusalem anymore. The old covenant ended in AD 70.

The Many Signs:

  1. Many will claim to be the Messiah v.6
  2. Many will be deceived v.6
  3. rumors of wars will abound v.7
  4. There will be international and inter-kingdom persecution v.8
  5. There will be earthquakes and famines as the beginnings of pangs v.8
  6. You (plural) shall be whipped in sanhedrins and in synagogues v.9
  7. Y’all shall be brought before rulers and kings to testify about Me v.9
  8. The gospel must first be published among all nations. v.10
  9. You will be given what to say by the Holy Spirit v.11
  10. Families will be divided and turn on each other v.12
  11. Y’all shalll be hated by all because of My Name v.13
  12. The one enduring into the telos, this one shall be being saved v.13
  13. You will see the abomination (the disgrace) of this desolation (complete emptying of the true Jews by the untrue Jews) by way of the arrogant rogue leadership v.14
  14. The affliction of those days will be worse than ever v.19
  15. False messiahs and prophets shall arise to deceive if possible even the elect (they contradicted the warnings of Jesus and offered alternate versions of what was really happening) v.22
  16. After the affliction, the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give light v.24
  17. The stars of the heavens shall be falling out v.25
  18. Then they shall be seeing the son of the Humanity coming in the clouds v.26
  19. Then He shall be commissioning the messengers of Him and assembling His chosen ones (The chosen people of God became the new covenant church and churches — Revelation 1:19-20).

Something changed in verse 26. Jesus, who was addressing Peter, James, John and Andrew as “y’all”, now addresses “they”. Jesus came to divide the Jews into two groups: His and not His. Those who weren’t watching for Jesus suddenly see Him coming in the clouds, but it’s too late. The unbelievers who refused to see the 3rd day sign wouldn’t take heed to any of the other signs either. Only the chosen Jews became His eternal assembly when the old city was disassembled. The abominable desolaters were themselves desolated after they saw the sign of the Roman armies that surrounded them.

Luke 21:20

CLV 20 Now whenever you may be perceiving Jerusalem surrounded by encampments, then know that her desolation is near.” [Am I supposed to believe after thousands of years are fulfilled we will do all these things over again or will we just redo some of the “all things” that were about to be fulfilled according to Matthew 13:4? I say we because I belong to the Jews’ new covenant too.]

The abomination that caused the final desolation was the unbelievers in Jerusalem who tried to kill all belief. The abomination of Jerusalem emptying herself of God’s presence (the visible disgrace of her emptiness) preceded her destruction. The abomination of her desolation was her violently enforced unbelief. She who was made desolate in the end was the typical Jerusalem. The desolaters were desolated. The people of the typical Jerusalem wanted nothing to do with the people of the heavenly Jerusalem. The unbelievers rid themselves of all the godly people in the name of keeping the types. The unbelievers persecuted those who obviously had the Holy Spirit in them. Nothing can ever be more disgraceful or abominable than old covenant Jerusalem rejecting new covenant Jerusalem, i.e., the old covenant church rejecting and expelling the new covenant church. The truly offended Jews are the believing Jews not the unbelieving Jews. The abomination was complete when the unbelievers managed to rid the land of all belief.

2 Thessalonians 1:7

7 and to give you [y’all], those being troubled, relief with us at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from Heaven with messengers of His power,

The believing Hebrews were already surrounded by a cloud of witnesses in their born again church. They saw the new covenant truth before it was too late.

Hebrews 12:1

CLV 1 Surely, in consequence, then, we also, having so vast a cloud of witnesses encompassing us, putting off every impediment and the popular sin, may be racing with endurance the contest lying before us,

Hebrews 11:13,40

13 In faith all these died, not being requited with the promises, but perceiving them ahead and saluting them, and avowing that they are strangers and expatriates on the basis of the land. 40 (the looking forward is to something better), that, apart from us, they may not be perfected.”

Apart from the telos of the first century Hebrews, nobody would be telosed. Salvation is of the Jews. Telos is the ancient Greek term for an end, fulfilment, completion, goal or aim; it is the source of the modern word ‘teleology’.

These faithful examples endured tribulation even from their own countrymen, because of their faith, the disgraceful cosmos was not worthy of them (Hebrews. 11:38).

τελειόω

The New Testament never uses the popular phrase ‘second coming’ of Jesus. His return for both the re-marriage and the destruction is associated with clouds. Old testament clouds is where God met His people. Both blessings and fear of death accompanied God’s cloud-veiled appearances. AD 70 was no old testament exception. The old testament was completely fulfilled before it was all wrapped up in the new human clothing. The last sign that the old covenant was ending was the destruction of Jerusalem. Every eye saw that sign. Even unbelievers caught in the land of abomination saw the sign of the end of the old covenant system. If animal sacrifices weren’t insufficient and temporary then why were they continuously repeated until they were put to rest by the Jewish Christ from the tribe of Judah?

Revelation 1:7

YLT 7 Lo, he doth come with the clouds, and see him shall every eye, even those who did pierce him, and wail because of him shall all the tribes of the land. Yes! Amen!

When the Pharisees asked Jesus for a sign He called them an adulterous generation. They were being unfaithful to their marriage with God. They needed to see the gospel and get faithful, hence the 3rd day sign would be given to them before the end came. Jesus saved all His chosen Jews before He deatroyed Jerusalem. The chosen ones were told to put the old unfaithful man [continuously being re-covered by animal sacrifice] to death and follow Him as the new firstborn husbandman of the regenerated body. They were being called to faithfulness. After Pentecost, believing Jews were no longer in their flesh mode with the unfaithful old covenant Jews. The faithful Jews were no longer part of the adulterous generation, after their Holy Spirit re-generation. The Holy Spirit made the Jews the holy people of God. After Pentecost, anyone without the Holy Spirit were not God’s chosen people.

Matthew 12:38-42

LITV 38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, Teacher, we desire to see a sign from you. 39 But answering, He said to them, An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign, and a sign shall not be given to it, except the sign of Jonah the prophet. 40 And even as “Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish three days and three nights,” so shall the Son of man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights. Jon. 1:17 41 Men, Ninevites, will stand up in the Judgment with this generation and will condemn it. For they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and, behold, a Greater-than-Jonah is here. 42 The queen of the south will be raised in the Judgment with this generation and will condemn it. For she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and, behold, a Greater-than-Solomon is here.

Was the first century adulterous generation of unbelievers condemned or was it blessed? Did God’s wrath come upon His chosen people as the old covenant ended or did God bless His chosen people with eternal life? Did Jesus come to divide the Jews between faithful and unfaithful or did He just randomly divide Jewish family members against each other? Were their sheep and goats in first century Jerusalem? Only the goats were left in Jerusalem when AD 70 arrived. The goats couldn’t see the signs of the end (plural) until they saw the 3rd day sign (singular). Their new covenant was spiritually discerned. The flesh and blood Jews couldn’t see the signs. Until it was too late. Every eye saw the very last sign. The AD 70 destruction signaled the end of the old testament.

Luke 18:1-8

LITV(i) 1 And He also spoke a parable to them to teach it is always right to pray, and not to faint, 2 saying, A certain judge was in a certain city, not fearing God and not respecting man. 3 And a widow was in that city, and she came to him, saying, Avenge me from my adversary. 4 And for a time he would not. But after these things he said to himself, Even if I do not fear God, and do not respect man, 5 yet because this widow causes me trouble, I will avenge her, that not coming to the end, she subdue me. 6 And the Lord said, Hear what the unrighteous judge says; 7 and will God not at all execute the avenging of His elect, those crying to Him day and night, also having been long-suffering over them? 8 I say to you that He will carry out the avenging of them speedily. But the Son of man coming then, will He find faith on [about, towards, upon] the earth [land]?

Those people, who were all about being on the land, were not the faithful ones. They ignored the signs of the end and got trapped in the old covenant destruction event. This event signified the loss of salvation for the unfaithful Jews who tried to save their old world of infidelity by keeping their old covenant land. Their ending revealed the new covenant witnesses to be the true sons of God. The faithful new covenant Jews saw the signs before it was too late. It was too late to see the blessings in the name of the Lord after their destruction came.

To say “Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord” is to see and receive Christ and His message. Jesus told his Jewish disciples, “He that receives you, receives Me.” (Matthew 10:40) Was Jesus more bothered with a pig on the defunct alter or about the attempted elimination of His new covenant Jewish people? What was the real abomination?

Matthew 23:36-39

YLT 36 verily I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation. 37 `Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that art killing the prophets, and stoning those sent unto thee, how often did I will to gather thy children together, as a hen doth gather her own chickens under the wings, and ye did not will. 38 Lo, left desolate to you is your house; 39 for I say to you, ye may not see me henceforth, till ye may say, Blessed is he who is coming in the name of the Lord.’

Of course Jesus was seen again by the faithful Jewish apostles who blessed the new covenant Jews in His name. Faithful Jews saw the 3rd day sign and all the other signs. Unfaithful Jews didn’t see Jesus as their Christ risen from the dead, until it was too late. The unfaithful Jews became an abomination to the true Jews they were masquerading as. And then their end came.

Revelation 6:9-11

YLT 9 And when he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony that they held, 10 and they were crying with a great voice, saying, `Till when, O Master, the Holy and the True, dost Thou not judge and take vengeance of our blood from those dwelling upon the land?’ 11 and there was given to each one white robes, and it was said to them that they may rest themselves yet a little time, till may be fulfilled also their fellow-servants and their brethren, who are about to be killed—even as they.

Romans 13 is about fulfilling Mark 13. God uses the Roman authorities to Judge those who are resisting God. The unfaithful Jews chose to be stubborn and keep working in their darkness. The law is fulfilled by loving one another. The unfaithful Jews were hating on their own brethren in the flesh. They would see Mark 13 and Romans 13 fulfilled on their lawlessness in AD 70.

Romans 13

CLV 1 Let every soul be subject to the superior authorities, for there is no authority except under God. Now those which are, have been set under God, 2 so that he who is resisting an authority has withstood God’s mandate. Now those who have withstood, will be getting judgment for themselves3 for magistrates are not a fear to the good act, but to the evil. Now you do not want to be fearing the authority. Do good, and you will be having applause from it.” 4 For it is God’s servant for your good. Now if you should be doing evil, fear, for not feignedly is it wearing the sword. For it is God’s servant, an avenger for indignation to him who is committing evil.” [The most evil thing happening was by those under law murdering those who had the love of God in them. The unfaithful Jews were killing the faithful Jews] 5 Wherefore it is necessary to be subject, not only because of indignation, but also because of conscience.” 6 For therefore you are settling taxes also, for they are God’s ministers, perpetuated for this self-same thing.” 7 Render to all their dues, to whom tax, tax, to whom tribute, tribute, to whom fear, fear, to whom honor, honor.” 8 To no one owe anything, except to be loving one another, for he who is loving another has fulfilled law.” 9 For this: “You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not testify falsely, you shall not covet, and if there is any other precept, it is summed up in this saying, in this: “You shall love your associate as yourself.” 10 Love is not working evil to an associate. The complement, then, of law, is love.” 11 This, also, do, being aware of the era, that it is already the hour for us to be roused out of sleep, for now is our salvation nearer than when we believe.” 12 The night progresses, yet the day is near. We, then, should be putting off the acts of darkness, yet should be putting on the implements of light.” 13 As in the day, respectably, should we be walking, not in revelries and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and jealousy, 14 but put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and be making no provision for the lusts of the flesh.”

Peter was once corrected by Paul because he fell for the false requirements of the judaizers. Typical circumcision was not a new covenant essential for any body: Jew or Gentile. Paul did not allow Peter to judge the resurrection body by typical circumcision still in the flesh. Peter had that backward. The one essential requirement to be God’s true sons is the Holy Spirit circumcision of the heart. You must be born again to enter the kingdom, not you must be circumcised in the flesh. Circumcised Peter faithfully joined the circumcised Jewish martyrs under the alter in heaven before the Day of the Lord fully arrived.

1 Peter 1

CLV 1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the chosen expatriates [12 tribes] of the dispersion… 5 who are garrisoned by the power of God, through faith, for salvation ready to be revealed in the last era… 9 being requited with the consummation of your faith, the salvation of your [Hebrew] souls10 Concerning which salvation [salvation is of the Jews] the prophets seek out and search out, who prophesy concerning the grace which is for you [scattered Hebrews], 11 searching into what or what manner of era the spirit of Christ in them [Holy Spirit moved Israelites] made evident

2 Peter 1:14-21

LITV 14 knowing that the putting off of my tabernacle is soon, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. 15 And I will also be diligent to cause you always to have memory of these things after my departure. 16 For not following fables which had been cleverly devised, but having become [Jewish] eyewitnesses of the majesty of Jesus Christ, we [Jews] made known to you [Hebrews] the power and coming of our Lord. 17 For receiving honor and glory from God the Father such a voice being borne to Him from the magnificent glory, “This is My Son, the Beloved, in whom I was well pleased,” Psa. 2:7; Gen. 22:2; Isa. 42:1; Matt. 17:5 18 even we [Jews] heard this voice being borne out of Heaven, being with Him in the holy mountain, 19 and we [Jews] have the more established prophetic word, in which you [Hebrews] do well to take heed, as to a lamp shining in a murky place, until day dawns and the Day-star rises in your hearts; 20 knowing this first, that every prophecy of Scripture did not come into being of its own interpretation; 21 for prophecy was not at any time borne by the will of man, but having been borne along by the Holy Spirit [in Israelites], holy men of God spoke.

The true Jews are forever honored by me as the foundational builders of their new covenant church. I used to fall for the modern day Judaizers who teach another Jewish-laid foundation is necessary. Like Peter who mistakenly wanted to keep his typical circumcision, modern day Judaizers want to return to all the types. Will the unfaithful Jews be awake next time around, before they are destroyed again when the final sign arrives again? Will Jesus then return to the types and rule the Jews in the flesh? Even during Jesus’ 3 1/2 years of ministry to the old covenant Jews, He served them in the power of the Holy Spirit. Will Jesus send the Holy Spirit to resurrect the Jews again? Will it be their second Holy Spirit rebirth? Jesus didn’t tell Nicodemus that he had to be born from above twice to be saved from the coming destruction.

John 3:6-7

CLV 6 That which is begotten by the flesh is flesh, and that which is begotten by the spirit is spirit.” 7 You should not be marveling that I said to you, ‘You must be begotten anew.'”

A new flesh and blood body won’t save any body, even Judaizers. Your spirit must be born again by way of the Holy Spirit.
