Covenant Theology vs Dispensationalism

Calvin and Luther were covenant theologians. They predated dispensationalism by hundreds of years. They are accused of being antisemite because they didn’t believe the claims being made by their contemporaries, who were claiming to be the real Jews. Calvin and Luther built upon the foundation of the true Jews. They were in the proper sense as pro-semite as can be. There is no other foundation accept that which was laid by The One True Jew Himself. Dispensationalists reject the first century covenant transition made by the Jews themselves. Dispys insist that unbelievers (from the tribe of Judah or all 12 tribes?) must return to the old covenant law and be holocausted again for not keeping it again. They don’t believe that all whom God chose made His covenant transition with His Son. They think Jesus left some of God’s chosen people to die in the old covenant. He didn’t save all that were His.

The Bible makes it clear that all the true Jews moved into their new covenant in the first century. There is no other biblical definition of a true Jew post Pentecost. All true Jews received the Holy Spirit. If anyone doesn’t have the Spirit of Christ this one is not His. Romans 8:3-19. True Jews are not waiting to become citizens of old covenant Israel. The one requirement for Israeli citizenship after Christ is rebirth not un-re-birth. It was the Gentiles who joined the born again Jews in citizenship of Israel. Gentiles were being saved by being born again just as Jews were saved by being born again. Are we now waiting for the “true Jews” to join the citizenship of Israel by returning to their flesh birth in spite of their Holy Spirit rebirth? The Gentiles were alienated from Jewish citizenship because, unlike the Jews, they were apart from Christ. Jewish citizenship was realized and kept in Christ. Those Jews who tried to stay in the flesh covenant lost their promises of citizenship. They were judged to die under law in AD 70. Their citizenship was annulled.

Romans 8:13

CLV 13 for if you are living in accord with flesh, you are about to be dying. Yet if, in spirit, you are putting the practices of the body to death, you will be living.”

Ephesians 2:11-12 – Gentiles joined the citizenship of Israel by being born again

CLV 11 Wherefore, remember that once you, the nations in flesh – who are termed ‘Uncircumcision‘ by those termed ‘Circumcision,’ in flesh, made by hands -” 12 that you were, in that [flesh and blood mode] era, apart from Christ, being alienated from the citizenship of Israel, and guests of the promise covenants, having no expectation, and without God in the world.” [Jesus lived as a Jew in their flesh and blood covenant for 33 + years. The covenant blessing of Christ was to Abraham and his seed. Galatians 3:16]

The true to their Word Jews are pictured as the foundation of the new covenant Jerusalem. The new Jerusalem is the bride of Christ: the church. The new covenant church was clearly established by the 12 tribes and the 12 apostles. The blessed transition from the old to the new is complete. Jesus told the Jews who were still in their old covenant to keep on teaching all the law until the law was fulfilled. The law of the land was in tact until AD 70. The Jews in the land were warned to repent for 40 years. The unrepentant were destroyed under the law that they were so obviously breaking. After AD 70 nobody has been required by God to keep the old covenant laws in Jerusalem. Jesus’ 3 1/2 years of teaching was old covenant; law-keeping teaching. He was raised into the new covenant through His old covenant death and His new covenant resurrection. The Jews didn’t join Him in the new covenant until Pentecost. Both first fruit resurrections (barley on Nisan 17th and then wheat 50 days later, according to the law) occurred in the land while the law still had standing. The law didn’t go away at that time. There was a two-covenant overlap during the 40 year regeneration transition. Holy Spirit ministry in the land started with Jesus’ first baptism.

Nobody today is between covenants trying to keep the old covenant law. The old has passed away and the new has come. Jesus not only kept the law Himself, He also redeemed His people from the penalty of the law they could not fully keep. He sent the Holy Spirit to Jerusalem to resurrect the Jews into His new creation of heaven and earth. Hades still existed while new Jerusalem was being prepared in heaven. The new land has no Hades and the new heaven has the celestial city of Jerusalem. Only born again Jews became righteous, in the righteous One. Those who refused to transition to the new covenant creation became the most obvious law breakers. Before the end came to the old covenant hold outs they were acting very badly in the land. The old covenant law came down upon them even as it ended. That was the old covenant fulfillment without the Holy Spirit Jesus sent to the Jews in Jerusalem.

It is clearly understood that for 3 1/2 years Jesus was teaching old covenant Jews who were teaching other old covenant Jews. Like Jesus, they were living in the land under the old covenant laws. Of course you have to keep the laws of the land you are living in. The typical law of circumcision in the flesh was being fulfilled by the Holy Spirit and was not to be taught to the Gentiles who were living outside the typical land. James (aka Jacob) was still upholding the law of the land he lived in. Some Pharisees from the church in Jerusalem tried to teach typical old covenant law to the Gentiles living outside the land. Paul said, no way! The Gentiles were joining the old covenant Jews in their new covenant rebirth, not their old covenant law mode. Gentiles were not moving into the typical promised land where the law still had standing. They were joining the born again Jews as their promises were being fulfilled in the Spirit realm, where God and Jesus live: in the realm of heaven. We are kept by the faith of Christ. He faithfully fulfilled the old covenant law. He died in the old covenant in order to send the Holy Spirit to the old covenant Jews. All His chosen people were born again into the new covenant. He lost none who were His.

Jesus said nothing about a long dispensation between covenants nor did He speak of two new covenants: one for the Jews and one for the Gentiles. He said all who were His would be saved rather than perish to the age. That golden age has come and gone. His chosen people were not put on hold for thousands of years before being born again. All God’s chosen people were born again before their second 490-year failure consummated. The Jewish teacher was told by Jesus that they had to be born again or perish to the age. The resurrection message was decidedly not, “Jesus is alive, and here’s what that means for a future generation of Jews.” The gospel message is more along the lines of “Jesus is alive, and here’s what that means to us now.”

The Jews started being born again on the Pentecost (first fruit wheat harvest) immediately proceeding the (first fruit barley harvest) resurrection of Jesus. After that Pentecost the Jews went throughout the cities preaching the gospel to Jews only. Waiting thousands of years to be saved was not an option, especially for the Jews. The imminent promises were made to the Jews who were about to reach their millennial Jubilee. Missing the mark in the flesh under law was limited to one thousand years. That was over two thousand years ago. The Jews were the first to be saved by being born again. Gentiles joined the commonwealth of Israel without going through their thousand-year fulfillment of types.

Matthew 5:16-19 – The old covenant still had standing. In the land Jesus kept all the law of that land.

YLT 16 so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and may glorify your Father who is in the heavens. 17 `Do not suppose that I came to throw down the law or the prophets—I did not come to throw down, but to fulfill; 18 for, verily I say to you, till that the heaven and the earth may pass away, one iota or one tittle may not pass away from the law, till that all may come to pass. 19 `Whoever therefore may loose one of these commands—the least—and may teach men so, least he shall be called in the reign of the heavens, but whoever may do and may teach them, he shall be called great in the reign of the heavens.

Are we called least in the kingdom because we do not teach circumcision in the flesh today? The Jews themselves had to stop teaching circumcision during their covenant transition. Peter didn’t keep the typical food laws outside the land until the Judaizers showed up. Then Peter became a hypocrite. He acted like he was keeping the law of the land of Israel even in the Greek city of Antioch.

Galatians 2:11-14

LITV 11 But when Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was to be blamed. 12 For before some came from James, he ate with the nations. But when they came, he drew back and separated himself, being afraid of those of the circumcision. 13 And also the rest of the [born again] Jews dissembled with him, so as even [born again] Barnabas was led away with their dissembling14 But when I saw that they did not walk uprightly with the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before all, If you being a Jew, live as a non-Jew and not as the Jews, why do you compel the nations to Judaize?

Ephesians 2:14-16

YLT 14 for he is our peace, who did make both one, and the middle wall of the enclosure did break down, 15 the enmity in his flesh, the law of the commands in ordinances having done away, that the two he might create in himself into one new man, making peace, 16 and might reconcile both in one body to God through the cross, having slain the enmity in it,

It was to Israel that Christ was promised. Until the nations started receiving the Holy Spirit, they were not citizens of true Israel. The Gentiles received the promises of Jewish citizenship by joining the one new Jewish covenant.

Ephesians 2:11-12

YLT 11 Wherefore, remember, that ye were once the nations in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that called Circumcision in the flesh made by hands, 12 that ye were at that time apart from Christ, having been alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of the promise, having no hope, and without God, in the world;

There are no more old covenant law-keeping Jews. That is very good news for all true Jews. Their old covenant era ended after 40 years of Jesus’ Holy Spirit ministry. By way of Jesus’ 70 years of unblemished humanity and His 40 years of Holy Spirit ministry, all the Jewish types were fulfilled. If you visit the ancient site of old covenant Jerusalem today, the old covenant laws are not being kept by anybody. You are however required to keep the laws of the present day land you are in. All the true Jews moved into their promised new covenant. The 12 apostles fulfilled their covenant co-mission with Christ by becoming a light to the nations. They fulfilled their millennium together with their savior. Jesus fulfilled all the types. Jesus gave His great commission to the true Jews in the land before He ascended back to heaven. He then empowered the Jews to continue His very good work by way of His Holy Spirit He sent to the upper room Jews in Jerusalem. At 40 years from Jesus first baptism the covenant transition was complete. The typical regenerations were fulfilled by Jesus’ 40-year generation of the Holy Spirit enablement.

Ephesians 2:14-16

CLV 14 For He is our Peace, Who makes both one, and razes the central wall of the barrier” 15 (the enmity in His flesh), nullifying the law of precepts in decrees, that He should be creating the two, in Himself, into one new humanity, making peace;” 16 and should be reconciling both in one body to God through the cross, killing the enmity in it.”

Galatians 3:7-29

CLV 7 Know, consequently, that those of faith, these are sons of Abraham.” 8 Now the scripture, perceiving before that God is justifying the nations by faith, brings before an evangel to Abraham, that In you shall all the nations be blessed.” 9 So that those of faith are being blessed together with believing Abraham. 10 For whoever are of works of law are under a curse, for it written that, Accursed is everyone who is not remaining in all things written in the scroll of the law to do them.” 11 Now that in law no one is being justified with God is evident, for the just one by faith shall be living.” 12 Now the law is not of faith, but who does them “shall be living in them.” 13 Christ reclaims us [Gentiles joined the reclaimed Jews by the same Holy Spirit rebirth] from the curse of the law, becoming a curse for our sakes, for it is written, Accursed is everyone hanging on a pole14 that the blessing of Abraham may be coming to the nations in Christ Jesus, that we may be obtaining the promise of the spirit through faith.” 15 Brethren (I am saying this as a man), a human covenant likewise having been ratified, no one is repudiating or modifying it.” 16 Now to Abraham the promises were declared, and to his Seed. He is not saying “And to seeds, as of many, but as of One: And to “your Seed, which is Christ.” 17 Now this am I saying: a covenant, having been ratified before by God, the law, having come four hundred and thirty years afterward, does not invalidate, 18 so as to nullify the promise. For if the enjoyment of the allotment is of law, it is no longer of promise. Yet God has graciously granted it to Abraham through the promise.” 19 What, then, is the law? On behalf of transgressions was it added, until the Seed should come to Whom He has promised [namely to the Jews], being prescribed through messengers in the hand of a mediator.” 20 Now there is no Mediator of one. Yet God is One. 21 Is the law, then, against the promises of God? May it not be coming to that! For if a law were given that is able to vivify, really, righteousness were out of law.” 22 But the scripture locks up all together under sin, that the promise out of Jesus Christ’s faith may be given to those who are believing.” 23 Now before the coming of faith we [Jews] were garrisoned under law, being locked up together for the faith about to be revealed.” 24 So that the law has become our [Jewish] escort to Christ, that we [Jews] may be justified by faith.” 25 Now, at the coming of faith, we are no longer under [law] an escort, 26 for you are all sons of God, through faith in Christ Jesus.” 27 For whoever are baptized into Christ, put on Christ, 28 in Whom there is no Jew nor yet Greek, there is no slave nor yet free, there is no male and female, for you all are one in Christ Jesus.” 29 Now if you are Christ’s, consequently you are of Abraham’s seed, enjoyers of the allotment according to the promise.”

If shepherds of God’s people today require a belief in eternal flesh and blood then they are being hypocrites like Peter and they need to be called out publicly. Eternal life in flesh and blood required keeping all the old covenant law. That is why flesh and blood did not inherit the kingdom. It couldn’t. That is why Paul confronted Peter to his face publicly. Peter gave in to peer pressure and folded. Peter was temporarily misleading God’s people. In Antioch, Peter gave in to the flesh and blood teaching of the Pharisees from the church of Jerusalem. The church in Jerusalem was still under the law in the land. Some people today still believe that flesh and blood can and must rule in the kingdom. The Bible teaches that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom. We must stand up to peer pressure from the modern day Pharisees who say we must return to flesh and blood in order to reign with Christ. Even a thousand years of ruling in the flesh will not inherit the kingdom.

1 Corinthians 15:50-58

CLV 50 Now this I am averring, brethren, that flesh and blood is not able to enjoy an allotment in the kingdom of God, neither is corruption enjoying the allotment of incorruption.” 51 Lo! a secret to you am I telling! We all [the first century born again Jews and Gentiles], indeed, shall not be put to repose, yet we all shall be changed52 in an instant, in the twinkle of an eye, at the last trump. For He will be trumpeting, and the dead will be roused incorruptible, and we shall be changed.” 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal put on immortality.” 54 Now, whenever this corruptible should be putting on incorruption and this mortal should be putting on immortality [at the millennial fulfillment], then shall come to pass the word which is written, Swallowed up was [the] Death by Victory.” 55 Where, O Death, is your victory? Where, O Death, is your sting? 56 Now the sting of [the] Death is [the] sin, yet the power of [the] sin is the [the] law.” 57 Now thanks be to God, Who is giving us the victory, through our Lord Jesus Christ.” [reign in the millennium in Christ or die trying to inherit the kingdom in the flesh] 58 So that, my beloved brethren, become settled, unmovable, superabounding in the work of the Lord always, being aware that your toil is not for naught in the Lord.”

Romans 8

CLV 1 Nothing, consequently, is now condemnation to those in Christ Jesus. Not according to flesh are they walking, but according to spirit, 2 for the spirit’s law of life in Christ Jesus frees you from the law of sin and death. 3 For what was impossible to the law, in which it was infirm through the flesh, did God, sending His own Son in the likeness of sin’s flesh and concerning sin, He condemns sin in the flesh, 4 that the just requirement of the law may be fulfilled in us, who are not walking in accord with flesh, but in accord with spirit.” 5 For those who are in accord with flesh are disposed to that which is of the flesh, yet those who are in accord with spirit to that which is of the spirit.” 6 For the disposition of the flesh is death, yet the disposition of the spirit is life and peace, 7 because the disposition of the flesh is enmity to God, for it is not subject to the law of God, for neither is it able.” 8 Now those who are in flesh are not able to please God. 9 Yet you are not in flesh, but in spirit, if so be that God’s spirit is making its home in you. Now if anyone has not Christ’s spirit, this one is not His.” 10 Now if Christ is in you, the body, indeed, is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is life because of righteousness.” 11 Now if the spirit of Him Who rouses Jesus from among the dead is making its home in you, He Who rouses Christ Jesus from among the dead will also be vivifying your mortal bodies because of His spirit making its home in you.” 12 Consequently, then, brethren, debtors are we, not to the flesh, to be living in accord with flesh, 13 for if you are living in accord with flesh, you are about to be dying. Yet if, in spirit, you are putting the practices of the body to death, you will be living.” 14 For whoever are being led by God’s spirit, these are sons of God.” 15 For you did not get slavery’s spirit to fear again, but you got the spirit of sonship, in which we are crying, “Abba, Father!” 16 The spirit itself is testifying together with our spirit that we are children of God. 17 Yet if children, enjoyers also of an allotment, enjoyers, indeed, of an allotment from God, yet joint enjoyers of Christ’s allotment, if so be that we are suffering together, that we should be glorified together also.” 18 For I am reckoning that the sufferings of the current era do not deserve the glory about to be revealed for us. 19 For the premonition of the creation is awaiting the unveiling of the sons of God. 20 For to vanity was the creation subjected, not voluntarily, but because of Him Who subjects it, in expectation” 21 that the creation itself, also, shall be freed from the slavery of corruption into the glorious freedom of the children of God.” 22 For we are aware that the entire creation is groaning and travailing together until now. 23 Yet not only so, but we ourselves also, who have the firstfruit of the spirit, we ourselves also, are groaning in ourselves, awaiting the sonship, the deliverance of our body.” 24 For to expectation were we saved. Now expectation, being observed, is not expectation, for what anyone is observing, why is he expecting it also? 25 Now, if we are expecting what we are not observing, we are awaiting it with endurance.” 26 Now, similarly, the spirit also is aiding our infirmity, for what we should be praying for, to accord with what must be, we are not aware, but the spirit itself is pleading for us with inarticulate groanings.” 27 Now He Who is searching the hearts is aware what is the disposition of the spirit, for in accord with God is it pleading for the saints.” 28 Now we are aware that God is working all together for the good of those who are loving God, who are called according to the purpose” 29 that, whom He foreknew, He designates beforehand, also, to be conformed to the image of His Son, for Him to be Firstborn among many brethren.” 30 Now whom He designates beforehand, these He calls also, and whom He calls, these He justifies also; now whom He justifies, these He glorifies also.” 31 What then, shall we declare to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 Surely, He Who spares not His own Son, but gives Him up for us all, how shall He not, together with Him, also, be graciously granting us all? 33 Who will be indicting God’s chosen ones? God, the Justifier? 34 Who is the Condemner? Christ Jesus, the One dying, yet rather being roused, Who is also at God’s right hand, Who is pleading also for our sakes? 35 What shall be separating us from the love of God in Christ Jesus? Affliction, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 According as it is written that “On Thy account we are being put to death the whole day [the deliverance of the body was not observable. The martyrs in heaven were told to wait just a little while longer], We are reckoned as sheep for slaughter.” 37 Nay! in all these we are more than conquering through Him Who loves us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor messengers, nor sovereignties, nor the present, nor what is impending, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus, our Lord.”
